Storm Threatens to Disrupt Transport Systems Across Northern UK

The first named storm of the season is forecast to hit the U.K. and Ireland with heavy rain and gale-force winds on Friday and Saturday, disrupting transport in northern regions.

Amber and yellow alerts have been issued for a large swathe of Ireland and Scotland, as well as parts of northern England and Wales. Storm Amy is expected to intensify as it tracks to the north of Scotland, bringing wind gusts in excess of 80 miles (129 kilometers) per hour, according to the U.K. Met Office.
