Hurricane Humberto will likely bulldoze a path for Tropical Storm Imelda to veer away from the coastal U.S. Southeast, sparing the region from a direct strike.
Category 4 Humberto’s winds rose to 145 miles (233 kilometers) per hour as of 8 a.m. local time, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory. Humberto will wear down a ridge of high pressure in the Atlantic, “causing an abrupt turn of Imelda” away from landfall on the U.S. coast between North Carolina and Florida, Eric Blake, a senior hurricane specialist with the center, wrote in a forecast.
